Fast: Entertainment Technology.
Prayer Focus: The Spirit to Move.
Today we are fasting from entertainment technology. For some of us this can be extremely hard. Our culture is based around entertainment these days, we rely on it to avoid having any free time where we might get “bored”. I want to challenge you today to use this free time to pray for the Spirit to move, but first, I want to clear up some things about the Holy Spirit. Some people are under the impression that the Spirit is just a “force” that God uses to speak to us or to make us feel good sometimes. This is not the case. The Spirit is a part of the Godhead (Father, *Spirit*, Son). The Holy Spirit is a person just like God and Jesus. We can pray to the Spirit and He can move in us. There is a threefold relationship with the Spirit demonstrated by three Greek prepositions, para, en, and epi. He is with you (Para), He shall be in you (En), and you receive power when He comes upon you (Epi). Epi is also referred to as the “Baptism of the Spirit”. This baptism of the Spirit is seen in Acts 8:
“Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” Acts 8:14-17 NKJV.
The baptism of the Spirit happens later in our walk after we invite Jesus into our heart. It’s not something that happens without our acknowledgment, but something we must invite and pray upon our lives. I want to encourage you today if you haven’t already, pray for the baptism of the Spirit. If you don’t feel ready to pray this by yourself, then come tonight and pray it together with the body. But beware, this doesn’t just make life magically easier. The baptism of the Spirit is when He reveals our Spiritual gifts and empowers us to use them for His Glory (For more on Spiritual gifts read 1 Corinthians 12). We will still face spiritual warfare but this empowers us to fight against it. So today let’s pray for Him to continue working in our individual lives-to convict and heal our hearts, and in our church-to grow us in unity and to give us vision for the work He is doing at CalvaryMac.
